The George Mitchell Nature Preserve feels like a true escape into the woods. As you walk through, it’s easy to forget how close you are to the city—until you’re surrounded by greenery, trails, scenic bridges, tranquil ponds, and old quarries.
The hike is pretty easy, and you’ll likely spot plenty of wildlife along the way. The trail is well-maintained and clearly marked, so you can expect to cover the 6.8 miles in roughly three hours and eight minutes.
There are several spots to take a break, and the ample shade helps keep things comfortable on hot days. However, do note that the southern side of the creek might be tricky to access after heavy rain, although the trails on the northern side usually stay open.
Pro tip: Keep an eye out for QR code markers—they’ll help you keep track of your location on the map and prevent you from getting lost. |

The Woodlands Children’s Museum may be small, but it makes the most of its space. Every activity is designed with kids in mind, so they can easily engage with everything on offer.
Kids can explore a market, cook and clean in a house setup, and dig or build with recycled tire “dirt.” They can also dress up as firefighters or other characters, and enjoy LEGO sets, fishing, and building stations.
While the museum itself is compact, it’s well-suited for a fun, safe experience for your child. You might want to plan a lunch at one of the nearby eateries, as the museum doesn’t have a huge range of eateries.
Pro tip: The entrance and exit aren’t gated, so keep a close eye on the kids to ensure they stay safe. |

The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion is an excellent spot for concerts. Lawn seats are the most affordable, and you can either rent a chair for $10 each or bring a blanket to sit on the grass for free. The venue recently upgraded the lawn area with clean turf, replacing the old, dirty grass.
Security is tight with plenty of staff around, and there are several concession areas. While parking might involve a bit of a walk, it’s a pleasant stroll along the lit-up waterway after dark.
Jimmy Buffett, Dave Matthews Band, Ozzy Osbourne, Jack Johnson, Alabama, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Kenny Chesney are just a few of the many former acts who have graced this stage.
Additionally, the Texas Music Festival Orchestra, Houston Symphony, Houston Ballet, and Houston Grand Opera often perform here.
Pro tip: Arrive early to snag a good lawn seat, especially for popular shows. Also, bring an empty water bottle to refill at the water cooler and avoid paying $10 for bottled water. |

This spot is one of The Woodlands’ top dining choices, offering a fantastic array of American Southern, Cajun, and lunch fare. The food is well-executed, with large portions and great customization options at a reasonable price.
The menu features a diverse selection, and we opted for the popular TRG burger. It was one of the best burgers we’ve had in the area—fresh, perfectly seasoned, and grilled to perfection.
The onion rings were a standout too, with a superb batter that set them apart from the usual. They also have live music on Wednesdays and Sunday evenings starting at 5:30 pm!
Pro tip: Be prepared for a wait for a table, but once seated, your food will come out quickly. Also, the parking lot can be quite tight, so plan accordingly. |
