Just last month, I decided to break out of my comfort zone and try a beginner’s salsa class. Not only did I learn some new moves (though with varying degrees of success!), but I also met a fantastic group of people.
It was a reminder that sometimes the best experiences come from stepping into the unknown. So if you’re looking for a way to break free from the mundane and inject some excitement into your life, look no further!
This list of unique activities in Houston will have you exploring hidden gems, unleashing your creativity, and maybe even discovering a new passion (or a hidden talent for salsa).

Gather your friends or invite a date for a fun night out learning about wine in a tasting at Pur Noire Urban Wineries! They bring the best of Napa Valley to Houston with their delicious selection of premium wines.
You’ll be entertained as a group by the host, who will give you a background of the wines while serving you. It’s a fun and interactive experience where you can ask questions, share your impressions, and maybe even discover your new go-to bottle.
You’ll choose from 3 different wine flights to swirl, smell, and sip. It’s all about appreciating the experience and the wine’s flavor profile, not about drinking too much, so don’t feel that you need to finish all the wine that you’re served!
Light snacks are served at the winery, so consider eating something beforehand if you’re concerned about drinking on an empty stomach. Try their charcuterie board filled with cheeses, fresh and dried fruit, cold cuts, crackers, and more to pair with your wine!
Pro Tip: Pur Noire Urban Wineries has a Wine Club! This allows you to get discounts on their wines and have access to a members-only lounge. |

For those who want to make a difference in the community, try volunteering at Second Servings of Houston! This amazing organization doesn’t just rescue food. It also empowers compassionate Houstonians who want to fight hunger and give back.
You can join as a “second seat” volunteer and help pick up food from donors and deliver them to the charities in need. Expect to spend around 5-7 hours so it’s going to be an active day filled with lifting and riding around the city in a refrigerated van.
This experience will give you a first hand look at all the food that could have gone to waste if not for the organization. But as tiring as it sounds, this experience will allow you to feel the gratitude of the donors and recipients, which makes it all worth it!
Don’t have enough time? You can also volunteer for their monthly PopUp Grocery Stores! You’ll be helping by unloading food from vans and arranging them by category for the “shoppers” who will drop by. This event usually lasts around 2 hours.
Pro Tip: To be a “second seat” volunteer, you’ll need to be more than 16 years of age and be able to lift 30 to 40 lbs. |
