Houston is a hub for art and creativity so it’s not surprising that it’s also home to plenty of awesome artists! It’s easy to be inspired with all the murals and art installations scattered across the city.
I dabbled in painting in my youth and I remember my first visit to a local arts and crafts store feeling a bit intimidated. Thankfully, the owner was an artist, and I was lucky to learn a lot about painting during my many visits after that.
We’re lucky to have wonderful craft stores in Houston, which is why we created this list!. Whether you’re a professional artist, DIY-ing home decor, or starting a new hobby, there’s definitely a store in the city that can help you bring your ideas to life.

Michaels is the country’s biggest arts and craft supplies store chain, so all makers or just anyone who’s tried to do anything DIY has probably visited at least one of their branches. The Dacoma Street location is our favorite branch to visit!
If you’re on the hunt for art supplies, scrapbook materials, fabric, canvases, yarn, knitting and crochet supplies, frames, beads, jewelry kits, anything floral, and even cricut machines along with its accessories, you’ll likely find it here!
They also offer a nice selection of materials for DIY decorations for special occasions such as Halloween, Day of the Dead, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Looking for the perfect costume? Michaels has all sorts of knick knacks for your costume to stand out.
This place is great as a one-stop shop for all types of general creative hobbies, although if you need something more specific, like certain oil paint brands or specific types of paper or canvas, you’re better off looking at the more specialized stores.

Texas Art Supply has been supporting the Houston art scene since the 1950s! Over the past six decades, their Montrose store has become the largest stand-alone arts and crafts store in the country, offering over 60,000 art products.
This store is a traditional visual artist’s paradise! They sell all kinds of art supplies, art hardware, specialty paper and they carry well-known brands such as Liquitex, Golden, Winsor & Newton, Posca, Higgins, Faber Castell, Caran d’Ache, and Prismacolor.
They also have an impressive paper section, selling everything from unique handmade papers from around the world to beautiful cardstock. Most of their paper products aren’t listed online, so you need to drop by to see them for yourself.
And here’s another great thing about this shop–we found that their name-brand products have prices that are lower than other big-name arts and crafts stores!

Since opening in 2010, Texas Art Asylum has become a go-to spot in Houston for unique art and craft supplies. They take clean, reusable items from local businesses and people and have managed to keep over 300 tons of materials out of landfills.
You’ll find brand new supplies like colorful yarn, needlework tools, and fun stickers alongside gently used items such as paint brushes, canvases, and partial bottles of paint.
The store is also filled with treasures for every type of hobbyist and artist. They sell vintage books and quirky antiques, as well as unique ephemera and even doll parts for those looking for supplies for mixed media projects.
Because most of the items are gently used, they’re sold at incredibly cheap prices! So for those who have a tight budget but are in desperate need of art supplies, Texas Art Asylum is a must-visit shop.

Art Supply on almeda is a small arts and crafts store on Almeda Road that’s gained a large following for the personalized care they give to each customer! This is a perfect shop for beginner artists who still need assistance to find the perfect set of supplies.
They sell name-brand art accessories, drawing supplies, media kits, paints, finishes, papers, pads, pens, markets, tapes, adhesives, and more! They also sell bookbinding supplies and offer framing services.
As a small neighborhood store, their prices on some items are a little more expensive, but are worth paying because of the high quality. They also have canvas sizes that are a bit hard to find, so it’s always a good bet to come here for odd canvas sizes.
This store is a favorite among fine arts students, thanks to its year-round 20% discount on supplies. Plus, at the start of each school year, they increase the discount to 25%, so mark your calendars for a supply restock every August!

In 1983, Paper Source started as a handcrafted paper store in Chicago, and now it’s a national brand with multiple stores in the Houston area! We frequent the Westheimer location for the expert gift wrapping services at this store.
